Meta Ads versus Google Ads: demand generation and demand capture

Meta and Google can both generate customers, but they often meet the customer at different points in the buying journey.

Meta often interrupts attention

People usually open Facebook or Instagram to consume content rather than search for a product. An advert must earn attention, communicate the proposition and create enough interest for the person to act now or remember the brand later.

This makes creative quality, audience repetition, click behaviour and video attention especially important.

Google often responds to expressed intent

A person typing a search into Google is showing some level of intent. The commercial quality of that intent depends on the words used. “Emergency plumber Bristol” is different from “how to become a plumber”. Search-term visibility and relevance therefore matter.

Neither platform should receive automatic credit

A customer may discover a business through Meta, later search the brand on Google and finally purchase directly. Meta may have created the initial interest, while Google captured the later search. Attribution settings can cause both to claim the conversion.

Useful Meta Ads questions

  • Which creative ideas stop people and which keep them watching?
  • Are people seeing the same advert more often while clicks fall?
  • Which adverts are above the target after enough spend?
  • Are purchase campaigns being compared with awareness activity?

Useful Google Ads questions

  • Which search terms consumed budget without a meaningful result?
  • How much performance comes from people already searching the brand?
  • Is visibility limited by budget or poor rank?
  • Are conversion actions measuring real sales or qualified leads?

Why AdSpend Lens uses separate visual models

A single dashboard can summarise total spend and tracked value, but deeper analysis must respect how each platform operates. Meta needs creative and audience views. Google needs keyword, search-term, campaign-type and intent views.
